The Romanian Athenaeum - the symbol of Bucharest, is a concert hall in the center of Bucharest.
It was built on the foundation of a hippodrome with the help of the "Give a Lion for the Athenaeum" campaign. Inside has a fresco representing the history of Romania. Athena and CEC have the same architect.
The Romanian Athenaeum was erected in the Garden of the Episcopate, a land belonging to the Vacarestis family. Many contemporaries have criticized the location ... because the place chosen was considered too far from the city center and very difficult, especially in winter. It did not have enough central land, should it have necessarily been chosen this place "on the outskirts of the city"? In 1886 the building began to be built; some of the funds were gathered by public subscription at the giveaway of a leu for the Athenaeum.
The building was inaugurated on February 14, 1888. The façade is a peristil with a width of 48 m. The 6 columns of the peristyle are 12 meters high, being identical in size to those of Erechteion in Athens.
Inside, the concert hall, with a diameter of 28.50 m and a height of 16 m, has 600 seats and 52 lodges (about 794 seats in total).
